What a Car Lockset Change Actually Involves

A full lockset change is more involved than a standard key replacement or a single lock repair. It’s a structured security restoration process, and understanding what’s included helps explain why it’s the right response when security has been genuinely compromised.
Door locks are replaced first. Even if only one door was targeted in a break-in attempt, the locks are typically changed as a set — partly for security, partly because mismatched locks that require different keys are genuinely inconvenient to live with.
The ignition barrel is replaced where the original keys could operate it. This eliminates the risk of the stolen key being used to start the vehicle even if it can’t get past the immobiliser.
The boot lock is replaced where applicable and where the original keys operated it.
New keys are supplied and programmed to the new lockset. The vehicle’s immobiliser system is updated to recognise only the new keys, and any previous keys — including the stolen ones — are permanently removed from the system.
