The Key Goes In. It Just Won’t Turn

It’s one of those moments that catches you completely off guard. The key slides into the ignition the same way it has done a thousand times before โ€” and then nothing. It won’t budge. You try again, a bit more pressure this time, and still nothing. The temptation to force it is almost overwhelming, but something tells you that’s probably not the right move.
That instinct is correct. A key that won’t turn in the ignition is telling you something, and forcing it rarely ends well. In the best case you get lucky and it turns. In the worst case you snap the key off inside the barrel and turn one problem into two.
3 Counties Autolocksmith deals with ignition problems across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. We come to your location, work out what’s actually causing the key not to turn, and fix it on the spot โ€” without towing, without dealership waiting times, and without charging you for guesswork.

Why Won’t the Key Turn in the Ignition?

There are several reasons a key might stop turning, and they don’t all have the same solution. Getting the diagnosis right is the most important part of the job.
The steering lock is engaged. This is the most common cause of a key not turning, and the easiest to fix. If the steering wheel is locked โ€” usually because it was turned slightly as you got out of the car โ€” the ignition won’t turn until the wheel is moved in the right direction to release the lock. Try turning the wheel gently left and right while applying light pressure to the key. If it frees up immediately, that was the problem.
The key itself is worn. Car keys wear down over time. The cuts on the blade become shallower, the profile changes slightly, and eventually the key no longer aligns precisely enough with the ignition’s internal mechanism to turn it. This happens gradually, which is why people are often surprised โ€” the key worked fine yesterday, and today it won’t turn at all.
The ignition mechanism is worn. The same wear that affects keys affects the ignition itself. On higher-mileage vehicles especially, the internal components that the key engages with can become worn to the point where the key can’t get enough purchase to turn.
There’s a fault with the immobiliser or transponder. Modern vehicles use a transponder chip in the key to communicate with the immobiliser system. If this chip develops a fault, or if the ignition can’t read it properly, the car may prevent the key from turning as a security measure.
Debris or damage inside the ignition. Dirt, broken fragments of a previous key, or physical damage to the ignition can all cause a key not to turn.

What We Do When We Arrive

The first thing we do is ask you to try the key while we watch โ€” sometimes the cause is immediately obvious from the way the key behaves. From there we’ll check the steering lock, examine the key for wear, assess the ignition, and if needed run a diagnostic check on the transponder and immobiliser system.
Once we know what’s causing the key not to turn, we’ll explain it in plain terms and give you a fixed price for the fix. We won’t start work until you’ve agreed to it.
Most key-not-turning issues are resolved on the first visit, within an hour or two of our arrival. If for any reason the fix requires a part we don’t have on the van, we’ll tell you straight away and arrange to return as soon as possible โ€” we won’t leave you with a vague timeline.

How to Book

Call us, describe what’s happening, tell us where you are and what vehicle you’re driving. We’ll ask a few quick questions, give you a price, and get someone out to you. No call centre, no holding music, no “we’ll call you back to confirm.” Just a straightforward conversation and a technician on the way.
