A New Key Isn’t Much Use Until It’s Programmed

Cutting a car key is only half the job. Modern vehicles — and that means pretty much anything made in the last twenty-five years — use a transponder chip inside the key that communicates with the car’s immobiliser system. If the chip isn’t programmed to match the vehicle, the key will turn in the ignition and nothing will happen. The engine simply won’t start.
This catches a lot of people out. They’ve had a key cut somewhere, it fits perfectly, turns smoothly — and the car still won’t start. The key is physically correct. It just hasn’t been told it’s allowed to start that particular car.
Car key programming is the process of linking a new or replacement key’s transponder chip to a specific vehicle. Car key reprogramming is the same process applied to a key that was previously programmed — either to a different vehicle, or to the same vehicle but has lost its coding for some reason. What Car Key Programming Actually Involves

When we programme a key, we connect specialist diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s OBD port — usually located under the dashboard — and use it to communicate directly with the car’s ECU. The process tells the vehicle to recognise and accept the new key’s transponder signal.
Depending on the make and model, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to around half an hour. Some vehicles are straightforward; others have more complex security protocols that take longer to work through. Either way, we carry the software and hardware needed to programme keys for the vast majority of car and van makes on UK roads.
Car key reprogramming follows the same process. If a key has lost its programming — which can happen after a flat battery on some vehicles, after a fault with the ECU, or simply over time — we recode it to the vehicle without needing to replace the key itself.

What’s Included

Every key we programme is tested fully before we leave — we won’t pack up until the car is starting reliably with the new or reprogrammed key. If the key is also a remote locking key, we test that too.
We carry a 12-month warranty on all programming work. If a key we’ve programmed stops being recognised by the vehicle within that period due to a fault with our work, we’ll come back and resolve it at no additional cost.
